Laptop RAM Upgrades: SODIMM, CAMM2 and Compatibility

Whether a laptop can be upgraded at all depends entirely on which of three physical memory formats it uses, and that has to be confirmed before comparing a single spec sheet.

Before comparing any spec sheet, the first question for a laptop RAM upgrade is whether the laptop can be upgraded at all β€” and that answer depends on which of three physically incompatible memory formats the machine uses, not on the brand or the price point. Getting this wrong means buying memory that will never fit the machine it was bought for.

Three formats, not one

Soldered memory is fixed to the motherboard at manufacturing time and cannot be upgraded under any circumstances, regardless of what capacity the laptop shipped with. This has become common on thin-and-light and premium ultrabooks, where board space and power efficiency are prioritized over serviceability. If a laptop uses soldered memory, the only path to more capacity is buying a different machine.

SODIMM is the traditional laptop memory format β€” a smaller physical module than a desktop DIMM, but a genuine slot-based, swappable format. Most laptops with any upgrade path at all use SODIMM, typically with one or two accessible slots under a bottom panel or keyboard tray.

CAMM2 is a newer, flatter module standard designed to replace SODIMM in some current-generation laptops. It offers higher achievable speeds than SODIMM in the same physical space, but a CAMM2 module and a SODIMM module are not interchangeable in either direction β€” a laptop built for one format has no slot for the other.

Confirming which of the three a specific laptop uses, and how many slots are actually populated versus available, has to happen before evaluating any specific kit. The manufacturer's own service documentation for that exact model is the reliable source; a memory format is not something to infer from a laptop's price tier or release year.

Matching form factor is necessary but not sufficient

Once the physical format is confirmed, matching it is necessary but does not guarantee a working upgrade. Two additional checks matter.

The board's validated speed and capacity list. Laptop memory controllers, especially on SODIMM platforms, are frequently validated against a specific list of module speeds and capacities rather than supporting anything within the standard's spec range. A module that is electrically DDR5-compliant can still fail to boot, or silently run at a reduced speed, if it isn't on that list.

Single-channel vs dual-channel population. A laptop with two SODIMM slots and only one populated is running in single-channel mode, which meaningfully underperforms the same total capacity split across both slots. If the laptop shipped with one module and one slot free, adding a second matched module rather than replacing the existing one is usually the better upgrade, provided the two modules can be matched closely enough in speed and timing to run together reliably.
